Professor Karl Walter Zilkens is the Director of the medical Centre at the showgrounds. And he knows the hit parade of the show visitor’s most frequent ailments. Heart and circulation problems are at the top of the list when the temperatures climb this high. Drinking enough is the right solution here.
“Normally one should drink two litres per day, but at the moment four litres is more appropriate,“ commented Zilkens. Non-carbonated mineral water is the best option, because it compensates best for the loss of minerals. The show visitors should also make sure they have got a hat with them and it should be light-coloured with air vents to avoid heat accumulation. What to do if you start to feel faint in the sun?
“If you are sitting down, move your feet and definitely seek the shade as fast as possible and keep on drinking and drinking.“
Real show classics are wasp stings, sunburn and blisters. There is not a lot one can do about the latter once they have already appeared. In order to avoid blisters, the expert has one piece of useful advice: “Wear socks”. Professor Zilkens added that most of the show visitors come well-prepared.
The medics at the CHIO Aachen showgrounds can fall back on the infrastructure of a “small clinic“ (Zilkens). The infrastructure encompasses sport physicians and physiotherapists in addition to a well-equipped medical centre (on the reverse side of the Mercedes-Benz stand) manned with event and emergency doctors.
